Common Stock
Securities representing equity ownership in a corporation, providing voting rights, and entitling the holder to a share of the company's success through dividends and/or capital appreciation.
Bond
A debt instrument issued for a period of more than one year with the purpose of raising capital by borrowing.
Mutual Fund
An open-ended fund operated by an investment company which raises money from shareholder and invests in a group of assets, in accordance with a stated set of objectives. Mutual funds raise money by selling shares of the fund to the public, much like any other type of company that can sell stock in itself to the public.
ETF
Exchange traded fund- A fund that tracks an index, but can be traded like a stock. ETFs always bundle together the securities that are in an index. Because Etfs are traded on stock exchanges, they can be bought and sold at any time during the day.
IRA
Individual Retirement Account - A tax-deferred retirement account for an individual that permits individuals to set aside money each year, with earnings tax-deferred until withdrawal beginning at age 59 1/2 or later ( or earlier, with a 10% penalty).
Variable Annuity
A life insurance annuity contract which provides future payments to the holder (the annuitant), usually at retirement, the size of which depends on the performance of the portfolios securities.
403(b)
A retirement plan similar to a 401(k) plan, but one which is offered by a non-profit organization. There are several advantages to 403(b) plans: contributions lower taxable income, larger contributions can be made to the account, earnings can grow tax deferred, and some plans allow loans.
401(k)
A defined contribution plan offered by a corporation to its employees, which allows employees to set aside tax-deferred income for retirement purposes, and in some cases employers will match their contribution dollar-for-dollar.
